7-Day Sumatra Explorer: Bukit Lawang, Berastagi & Lake Toba

Overview

This is North Sumatra from end to end. You begin in the rainforest at Bukit Lawang — two days trekking into Gunung Leuser for wild orangutans, with a night camped beside the river — then climb into the cool Karo highlands around Berastagi for a sunrise on Mount Sibayak. The last stretch drops down to Lake Toba, the largest crater lake in the world, and the Batak island of Samosir.

Seven days, three very different landscapes, and none of the logistics to worry about: private transport, hotels, guides, permits and meals are all arranged. It suits travellers who want the whole region in one trip, at a steady, unhurried pace.

Itinerary

• Day 1 · Medan to Bukit Lawang
  Airport pickup at Kualanamu and a scenic four-hour drive to Bukit Lawang. Check in, then the rest of the day is yours to settle in and wander the village along the river.
• Day 2 · Into the jungle (2D/1N trek)
  A 9:00 pickup and into Gunung Leuser on foot, your guide reading the forest as you go — orangutans, gibbons, siamangs, hornbills and more. Nasi goreng and fresh fruit for lunch around 1:00, then on to a riverside camp by mid-afternoon for tea, a cooked dinner and a night under the trees, with fireflies if you're lucky. All camping gear is provided.
• Day 3 · Morning wildlife & river rafting
  An early tea and breakfast, then a couple more hours tracking wildlife — or a swim by the camp, where curious orangutans and monkeys sometimes pass. After lunch, float back to the village on a traditional tube raft down the river, and check into your hotel.
• Day 4 · Up to Berastagi
  After breakfast, a 4.5-hour drive into the Karo highlands, stopping for views of Mount Sinabung. In the afternoon a local tour — the fruit market, Lumbini Park, traditional Karo houses and the Sidebuk-debuk hot springs. Dinner at the hotel, or out among Berastagi's street food.
• Day 5 · Sibayak sunrise & on to Lake Toba
  A 3:30 start for the sunrise hike up Mount Sibayak: a short minibus ride, then about an hour to the summit for first light over the ranges. Back down for breakfast, then south to Lake Toba with lunch beside the 120-metre Sipiso-piso waterfall. A 45-minute ferry brings you across to Samosir Island for the night.
• Day 6 · Samosir & Batak culture
  A full day on Samosir: the Siallagan stone chairs and the story of the old Batak kingdom, Ulos weavers at work, traditional houses, Tomok market, the royal tombs and a Sigale-gale puppet performance. The afternoon is free to rest by the lake or swim in its clear water.
• Day 7 · Departure
  A final breakfast, then a comfortable transfer back to Kualanamu airport or your hotel in Medan, timed to your flight.
